Who is a Kinesiologist?
Who is a Kinesiologist? Are they fitness trainers, physiotherapists? They might be often confused with these professions as they all deal with physical body movement, however, Kinesiologists differ as they have much more advanced knowledge. Kinesiologists need to obtain a minimum 4 year university degree in Human Kinetics or Kinesiology from an accredited university. They can hold a bachelors, masters or even a doctorate degree. This is much more education than fitness trainers or physiotherapists who usually only need to complete a diploma or certification program. In BC top Kinesiologists belong to the British Columbia Association of Kinesiology (BCAK).
Kinesiologists apply their advanced knowledge of human biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and psychomotor behaviour to assess human movement in a variety of scenarios to improve performance and function. They can develop health, wellness and fitness programs, assist to achieve healthy work environments and also focus on rehabilitation, management and prevention of injuries, chronic diseases and disabilities. Kinesiologists can design custom health and rehabilitation programs for people of all ages, fitness levels, activity levels and lifestyles. Their long term goal is to achieve physical and mental well-being for their clients.
Often physiotherapists, chiropractors and occupational therapists will refer patients to Kinesiologists for active rehabilitation. Active rehabilitation begins with a thorough assessment of the patient’s current physical function to direct the custom exercise program designed to bring the patient back to normal physical function. Many individuals have work or accident related injuries that require specific exercises for certain parts of the body in order to return the affected muscles to their original state and function level.
